In the Collected Rimes (Jiyun), the pronunciation is given as pǐ miè, sounding similar to piē. The Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) defines it as a stroke curving to the right, shaped like a line being pulled to the left. The annotation by Xu Kai states that when writing this character, one first raises the brush upward and then extends the main body.
