Pronounced shan. According to the Tang Rhyme (Tangyun) and Zheng Rhyme (Zhengyun), and consistent with the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) and Rhyme Compilation (Yunhui), the pronunciation is the same as the word for shirt.
Explanation in the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi): The character depicts hair, colorful decorations, or patterns. It is a pictograph. Xu Xuan states that it refers to hair and painted decorations. The Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) states that to decorate is called shan.
Furthermore, the Broad Rhyme (Guangyun) states it refers to long hair.
Additionally, pronounced xian. According to the Broad Rhyme (Guangyun) and the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), the pronunciation is the same as the word for the region of Siam. The meaning is the same as above.
Also, according to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), pronounced xian (rising tone). It is a surname of the Qiang people. Recorded in the Book of the Later Han (Hou Hanshu): Western Qiang Biography: During the reign of Emperor Yuan of the Han Dynasty, the Shan-jie and seven other tribes were in Longxi.
It also refers to a type of fish. Recorded in the Minzhong Haicuo Shu: The huang-shan is a fish with fine scales and a yellowish-red color.
