According to the Expanded Rhyme Dictionary (Guangyun) and the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), the fanqie pronunciation is xiang and ran. According to the Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), the fanqie pronunciation is su and qian. The character is pronounced the same as xian. Explanation of Names (Shiming) states: One who reaches old age but does not die is called a xian (immortal). The word xian also means qian (to move), referring to moving into the mountains. Yang Xiong (Yang Xiong) said: Sages do not take immortals as their teachers. Furthermore, the term taixian refers to a crane. The Classic of the Yellow Court (Huangting Jing) contains the line: The heart of the zither resonates in triple layers as the crane dances. It is also used to describe an appearance of moving lightly. As written in a poem by Du Fu (Du Fu): Moving slowly, one feels even more like an immortal. Additionally, Xianju and Xianyou are both names of counties. Xianxia is the name of a mountain ridge. It is also a surname.
