Pronounced zhòng (falling tone).
Explanation of Names (Shiming): The younger brother of one's father is called zhongfu. Zhong means middle, indicating a position in the center.
Book of Rites (Liji), Tan Gong chapter: In youth, one has a childhood name, upon reaching adulthood a courtesy name is chosen, and after the age of fifty, one is addressed according to the birth order of bo and zhong.
Also refers to a musical instrument. Er Ya, Explanation of Music (Shiyue): A large flute is called a chan, a medium-sized one is called a zhong, and a small one is called a yue.
Commentary on the Water Classic (Shuijing Zhu): Emperor Ming of Wei cast two bronze statues and arranged them outside the Sima Gate; they were known as Wengzhong.
Also a surname. Descended from Zhong Kan, a talented son of the legendary Emperor Ku. There is also the compound surname Zhongsun.
Also used interchangeably with the character for middle. Second month of spring can be called zhongchun; a second son can be called zhongzi.
