The Shuowen Jiezi (Shuōwén Jiězì) defines it as a personal name. Confucius' (Kǒng Fūzǐ) grandson Kong Ji (Kǒng Jí) had the courtesy name Zisi (Zǐsī). In the Han Dynasty, there was Guo Ji (Guō Jí).
