Pronounced cǎo. A general term referring to all kinds of flowers and grasses.
Book of Etiquette and Ceremonial (Yili): When in the wilderness, one refers to oneself as a subject of the wild and grassy fields.
Shuowen Jiezi: The form of the character consists of two sprout symbols. All characters related to grass are categorized under the Grass radical.
Guangyun: The form shown is the seal script. After evolving into clerical script, it is written as a component on top of characters.
Jiyun: Pronounced chè. Refers to the appearance of grass just beginning to sprout.
