According to the Tang Rhyme (Tangyun) and the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), the pronunciation is the same as the character for leaf. The Explanation of Simple and Compound Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) defines it as a thin flat piece of wood. Another source defines it as thin. Zheng Qiao states that it is the same as the character for leaf. The commentary in the Explanation of Simple and Compound Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) provides the pronunciation as suhe; the meaning is the same. According to the Jade Chapter (Yupian), the pronunciation is the same as the character for leaf; it is the same as the character for a small dish or window. In the Sea of Documents (Pianhai), it is also written in a variant form.
