Zi Collection, Middle Volume. Radical: Person (rén). Character: tōu. Kangxi stroke count: 11. Page 112, Number 03. According to the Broad Rhymes (Guangyun), the pronunciation follows the fanqie phonetic system of tuō and hóu. According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), the Rhyme Dictionary (Yunhui), and the Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), it follows the fanqie of tā and hóu. It is pronounced like the character tòu in the level tone. The Analytical Dictionary of Characters (Shuowen) defines the character as being careless or negligent. In the Zuo Tradition (Zuozhuan), during the thirteenth year of Duke Zhao, Zi Chan said that because the government of Jin has many factions, they have no leisure to deal with duplicity and negligence. The Records of Ritual (Liji), Record of the Benchmarks (Biaoji) section, states that being at ease and indulgent leads to daily negligence. The Erya (Erya), Shiyan section, defines it as frivolous. The Broad Rhymes also defines it as to steal. In the Guanzi (Guanzi), Interpretation of the Situations (Xingshijie) chapter, it states that the sage does not pursue profit or pleasure through underhanded means that later result in harm or sorrow. It also means superficial or unkind. In the Zuo Tradition, during the thirty-first year of Duke Xiang, it is mentioned that Zhao Meng's words were unkind. It is also used as a rhyming variant following the fanqie of róng and zhū, pronounced yú. In the Western Capital Rhapsody (Xijing Fu) by Zhang Heng, it says: Respectful and cautious in dignity and behavior, showing the people not to be negligent; I have esteemed guests, and their joy is pleasant; the influence of voice and teaching spreads out, overflowing throughout the heavens. Textual Research: Regarding the meaning of frivolous in the Erya, the reference to the Shigu section has been corrected to the Shiyan section in accordance with the original text.
