According to the Tang Rhyme (Tángyùn) and Jiyun (Jíyùn), the pronunciation of 冃 is the same as the character mào (帽). The Shuowen Jiezi (Shuōwén Jiězì) explains it as an article of clothing worn on a child's head. Xu Kai (Xú Kǎi) states that it is now written as the character mào (冒). Some versions of the Yupian (Yùpiān) also write it as the character mào (帽).
Also, according to the Jiyun, the pronunciation of 冃 is the same as the character mào (茂), meaning "to cover".
