The History of the Former Han (Qian Hanshu), Biography of Xifu Gong, records: Confused and muddled, not knowing what to do. The Fenglongzi, Yudu Chapter, describes it as: Dazed and confused, as if drunk. Additionally, the Tang Guoshi Bu records: Candidates who fail the imperial examination and drink wine are said to be da mao. Su Shi, in the poem Drinking After Failing the Examination with Pan San, writes: I see myself as having a troubled and frustrated appearance. It is also written in a variant form (maosao). It is also identical to the character mao (falling tone). It refers to old age and blurred vision. The History of the Former Han (Qian Hanshu), Annals of Emperor Wu, mentions: Pitying those who are old and have dim sight. The commentary states: Mao is the ancient form of the character mao (falling tone). It is a term for the elderly. Additionally, the Jade Chapters (Yupian) and Guangyun provide the pronunciation as mao (entering tone), and the Jiyun provides the pronunciation as mo (entering tone), with a sound similar to mang (entering tone). The meaning is the same. Furthermore, the Boya explains: Maomao means contemplation. Sometimes it is written in other forms. Additionally, the Jiyun provides the pronunciation as mei (falling tone).
