According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it means to open. It is composed of the characters for sun, one, and do not. Another theory says it means to fly or soar. Another says it means to grow. Another says it describes the appearance of the strong and the many. Also, according to the Collection of Jade Pendants (Peixi Ji), it means light. Also, according to the Geography Treatise in the History of the Former Han (Qian Hanshu), it refers to Qu-yang County in Jiaozhi Commandery. The commentary by Shigu states that this is the ancient form of the character for yang.
