According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), the reduplicated form 呭呭 refers to excessive or wordy speech.
According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to excessive speech, citing the sentence "Do not be so wordy" from the Book of Odes (Shijing), Greater Odes. Note that in current versions of the Book of Odes and the Works of Mencius (Mengzi), this is written using a variant form (xie).
According to the Broad Rhymes (Guangyun), 呭 also means to be happy.
