Jiyun (Jíyùn) gives the pronunciation as juān yíng qiè, sounding similar to jiōng.
Shuowen Jiezi (Shuōwén Jiězì) explains: What is outside the city is called jiāo, what is outside the jiāo is called yě, what is outside the yě is called lín, and what is outside the lín is called jiōng. It symbolizes distant boundaries.
Jiyun further states: The ancient form was written as 冋, symbolizing the capital city. The modern form adds 'earth' to be written as 坰.
