Comprehensive Collection of Characters (Zihui): Identical to the character pronounced mie. It is a surname from the State of Chu.
Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Biography of Mencius (Mengzi Zhuan): The State of Chu had figures such as Shizi, Changlu, and the person known as A Zhi Miezi.
Commentary: The Suoyin commentary states: 吀 is pronounced mie. The Bie Lu records it as Miezi. The Zhengyi commentary states: The Treatise on Literature (Yiwen Zhi) records that Miezi wrote eighteen chapters. Upon checking the History of the Former Han (Hanshu) Treatise on Literature, the current edition writes it as Miezi. Yan Shigu provides the pronunciation mi, indicating that mie and 吀 are interchangeable. Popular editions of the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji) erroneously write it as yu, and various rhyme dictionaries do not include the character 吀.
