Pronounced e.
As defined in the Analytical Dictionary of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to a decoy. One who traps birds ties a live bird to attract others, which is called an e. Xu Kai explains that an interpreter translates the languages of the four barbarian tribes and of birds and beasts; an e is a tool to lure birds, known today as a bird decoy. It also means to transform.
In the Classic of the Origin of the Universe (Yuanbao Jing), it is written that groups transform and flourish, and various things multiply and grow. The commentary notes that e is identical to e, meaning to transform.
