According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it means to move. In the Book of Odes (Shijing), it is written: "I would rather sleep and not move." The commentary states that the character means to move. The Explanation of Sounds (Shiwen) notes that the original text was also written as a variant form (e). In the Lesser Odes (Xiaoya), it is written: "Some sleep and some move." The Jade Chapter (Yupian) cites the Book of Odes (Shijing) using this character. The Broad Rhymes (Guangyun) states the original character is written as a variant form (e), and is also written as (e). The Explanation of Sounds (Shiwen) for the Lesser Odes (Xiaoya) states that the Han version of the Book of Odes (Shijing) writes it as a variant form (e). This variant form means to awaken.
It also means to transform. In the Book of Odes (Shijing), it is written: "The Duke of Zhou campaigned to the east, and the four states were transformed." The commentary states that the character means to transform. The Explanation of Sounds (Shiwen) notes it is also written as a variant form (e).
