Guangyun: Pronounced jian (rising tone). Jiyun: Pronounced jian (rising tone). To use bamboo to channel flowing water.
Bai Juyi, Record of the Stone Casket (Shihan ji): On the north side of West Lake there is a stone casket, and on the south side is a bamboo channel (jian) to release water for irrigating the fields; as for all other smaller channels, they must be closed and blocked when not irrigating the farmland. To the south of the channel, there was originally a broken embankment; if the water were to rise suddenly at the stone casket, it would overflow through the southern channel, and the embankment would collapse.
Also, Lei Pian: Pronounced dian (rising tone). Pianhai: Pronounced as xian (falling tone). The name of a type of bamboo.
