Wei Collection, Upper Volume Radical: Bamboo (zhú) kui Kangxi strokes: 18 Page 899, Entry 01 According to the Extensive Rhymes (Guangyun), the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), and the Rhyme Collection (Yunhui), it is pronounced kui. According to the Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), it is also pronounced kui. It refers to a soil basket. In the Book of Documents (Shangshu), the chapter on The Hounds of the Zhou (Lü'ao) states, To build a mountain of nine ren in height, the effort depends on a single basket (kui). The commentary states, A kui is a vessel for holding soil. Also, according to the Extensive Rhymes (Guangyun) and the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is pronounced kuai. It also refers to a basket. It is also written in a variant form. The History of the Later Han (Hou Hanshu), in the Treatise on Harmonics and Calendrical Astronomy (Lülü zhi), states, To build a mountain while leaving it exposed and unfinished, surpassing a single basket (kui). It is also used interchangeably with the character for chest (gui). In the History of the Former Han (Hanshu), in the Biography of Wang Mang (Wang Mang zhuan), it states, The guiding principles were all expanded, achieving success without a single chest (kui). The commentary states, A chest (gui) is a woven grass vessel used for holding soil. According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is the same as the character (yi). Textual research: The Extensive Rhymes (Guangyun) entry mentions bamboo arrows. We note that the Extensive Rhymes (Guangyun) entry for the character kui does not actually contain the text regarding bamboo arrows, so it has been removed. We have added the five characters qi gui qie from the Dictionary of Characters (Yupian) to the front. In the History of the Former Han (Hanshu), in the Biography of Wang Mang (Wang Mang zhuan), the commentary states that a chest (gui) is a vessel woven from bamboo. We have corrected the original text from woven grass to woven bamboo.
