That without a handle is called li, and that with a handle is called deng. Book of Odes (Shijing), Lesser Odes (Xiao Ya): Carrying the straw raincoat and the bamboo hat. The Commentary says: The bamboo hat is used to protect against the heat. Commentary on the Zuo Tradition (Zuo Zhuan): War chariots had no covers; the basket-maker would hold a bamboo hat and stand by the wheel hub to protect against cold and heat, which was called the bamboo hat hub.
