Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Book of Music (Yueshu): The northern flute resembles a pi li (a reed instrument) but has no holes. Later generations use it in ceremonial processions. It was created by Boyang when he fled into the Western Rong, made by rolling a reed leaf to blow through it.
