Book of Rites (Liji): When entering school, one strikes the box, which means to be modest in one's studies. Commentary: Striking the box means to beat a drum to alert the assembly, then opening the chest to take out the scriptures being studied.
Ceremonial and Rituals (Yili) Commentary: That which is square is called a qie. Sub-commentary: Square means narrow and long.
Zuo Commentary (Zuo Zhuan), Thirteenth Year of Duke Zhao: The people of Wei sent Tu Bo to present soup and a chest of brocade to Shu Xiang.
