Guangyun and Jiyun rhyme dictionaries and Yunhui state: Pronounced zou. It means an assistant or to be placed side by side.
Zuo Zhuan (Zuo Zhuan), 11th year of Duke Zhao: A woman from Quanqu dreamed that she used a curtain to cover the ancestral temple of the Meng family, and so she fled to Xizi. Xizi sent her to assist the secondary wife of the Yuan family.
Commentary: Zao means an assistant. The daughter of the Yuan family was a secondary concubine to Xizi, so he accepted the woman from Quanqu and had her serve as an assistant to help the secondary wife.
Zhang Heng, Western Capital Rhapsody (Xijing Fu): Following the attendant carriages, carrying the hunting dogs Xian and He.
Commentary: Zao means secondary or deputy.
Also, Zhengzitong states: It refers to the swift flight of birds flying together. Zao feathers of the Yuan and Lu birds. Seen in the Book of Tang (Tangshu).
Also, Ma Rong, Rhapsody on the Long Flute (Changdi Fu): Those who listen to zao melodies, longing for the ancient past from afar.
Commentary: Zao melodies are short, minor tunes.
Textual research: Zuo Zhuan, 11th year of Duke Zhao: A person of Quanqu had a daughter, she dreamed of covering the temple of the Meng family with her curtains, and subsequently fled to Xizi; Xizi made her assist the secondary wife of the Yuan family. We have carefully amended the text to reflect the original curtain imagery.
