According to the Shuo Wen Jie Zi (Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters), it is a container for holding cooked rice.
According to the Pian Hai (Sea of Documents), it is a bamboo vessel for holding objects.
Book of Odes (Shijing): Not filling the slanted basket. Commentary: The slanted basket is a type of earth-carrying tray, a vessel easily filled.
Book of Odes (Shijing): Presenting the basket. Commentary: A basket is a type of round woven container, used for carrying silk fabrics and gifts.
Also the name of a star. History of the Former Han Dynasty (Qian Han Shu), Treatise on Astronomy: The six stars known as the Bucket Ladle carry the basket, which is called the Wenchang Palace. Commentary: It resembles a basket, hence it is called carrying the basket.
Also the name of a bed. Zhuangzi, Discourse on Making All Things Equal (Qi Wu Lun): Resting on the same basket-bed with the king, eating meat and grain-fed animals. Commentary: Sima says that a basket-bed is a comfortable bed. Cui says that a basket is a square shape. Another interpretation is that it is a proper bed.
Also a place name. Zuo Tradition (Zuo Zhuan), Year 11 of Duke Wen: In summer, Uncle Zhong Huibo met with Xi Que of Jin at Chengkuang.
