Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen) states: A bamboo mat.
Book of Rites (Zhouli), Ministry of Rites: The official in charge of tables and mats includes two lower-ranking officials. The commentary states: A yan is a type of mat. The one spread on the bottom is called a yan, and the one spread on top is called a xi. By placing the yan on the bottom and the xi on top, seats are defined.
Explanation of Names (Shiming): Yan carries the meaning of extending and spreading out. It is spread to be level and smooth, looking extended and flat.
