For detailed annotations, refer to the nine-stroke entries under the Bamboo radical. Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen Jiezi): Written as a variant form. Zhengzitong E (Zhengzitong E): The character jié resembles the shape of a bone joint. In ancient times, it was used for fújié (tallies) to signify a token of trust. Half was kept outside, half inside. Taking its image from bone joints, it was therefore also borrowed to represent the character jié for tallies. In clerical script, it is written as jié. Yunhui (Yunhui): The character jié is different from the City radical (yì). The City radical (yì) is pronounced yì.
