Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen) states it refers to the hand. It is a pictograph. That there are three fingers signifies that the hand is most capable, and that its functions generally do not exceed three.
Yunhui (Collection of Rhymes) notes that when used as a side component, it is written in a variant form.
Also means further or again.
Also, according to the Yunbu (Supplement to Rhymes), it is pronounced yì. It means to repeat.
As cited in the Book of Odes (Shijing), in the Xiaoya (Lesser Odes of the Kingdom) section: Regarding men who are wise and sagely, they are moderate and composed when drinking wine. That foolish man does not know this, and once drunk, he becomes day by day more indulgent. Each of you must respect your own demeanor, for the mandate of heaven will not be repeated. Here, fu is pronounced bì.
