Pronounced ruò. Fusang, a mythical tree.
Shuowen Jiezi (Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters): The sun first emerges from the Tang Valley in the east, which is the Fusang tree that it ascends.
Xu says: Ruo is a type of tree name. It is a divine tree that grows naturally in the east.
Jingyun (Essential Meanings): Ruo has the meaning of being compliant; the underlying principles are similar. The ancients invented the meaning of making friends by using three "again" characters to form an ideogram, representing unity of heart and virtue, thus allowing for mutual assistance. The character for mulberry adopts this shape as an imitation of multiple hands, not for its original meaning.
Zhenge (Orthography and Errors): Two "again" characters make the word for friend; three "again" characters make ruo. When many people assist, there is a sense of compliance. It is an ideogram.
