Radical: Dog (quǎn)
Page 706, Entry 15
Pronounced zhuó.
In the Jade Pavilion (Yupian), it is a wild animal with leopard-like patterns.
Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhaijing): On the Yang Mountain, the wild animals found there are mostly rhinoceroses, si (a species of bovine), tigers, and zhuo.
Commentary: Guo Pu says the pronunciation of zhuo is zhuo. The Sea of Characters (Zihai) states: zhuo has tiger stripes on its hide.
Also: On the Yingmu Mountain, the mountain deity there resembles a human but possesses the tail of a zhuo.
Collected Rhymes (Jiyun): zhuo is the name of a wild beast that originates from Di Mountain, resembling a leopard but lacking patterns.
Note: According to the Classic of Mountains and Seas, Western Mountain Classic, Di Mountain contains the animal you. It was originally written as you, which Guo Pu annotated as pronounced yao. See the detailed entry for the character you. The Collected Rhymes cites this to explain zhuo, which is incorrect.
