Page 307, Entry 24
Pronounced shen.
According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), this represents two mountains. According to the Essential Meanings (Jingyun) by Wei Xiao, two mountains standing opposite one another, each remaining in its own place, represents the state of ultimate stillness. According to the Correct Meaning Guide (Zhengzitong), this character is simply the repeated form of the character for mountain. Its pronunciation and meaning are no different. Some believe that this is the ancient form of the character representing stillness (gen) in the phrase describing two mountains from the Book of Changes (Yijing), but this claim is overly pedantic. The Rhyme Collection (Yunhui) and the Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun) do not include this character.
