Yin Collection, Middle Volume Radical: Mountain (shān) Kangxi strokes: 8 Page 309, Entry 33 Pronounced hu (falling tone). According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to a mountain with grass and trees. In the Book of Odes (Shijing), it is written: Ascend that wooded mountain. Also, according to the Erya (Er ya), a mountain with many grass and trees is called hu, and one without grass and trees is called gai. The commentary notes that gai should be written as ji. It is observed that the Mao Commentary states that a mountain without grass and trees is called hu, and with grass and trees is called ji. Where this differs, it is likely a clerical error in transcription. Wang Su and Xu Shen both follow the Erya.
