According to the Sound Compendium (Jiyun), pronounced geng. It is the same as the character zheng. According to the Discussion of Writing (Shuowen), it describes the appearance of high mountains. Originally written as zheng. Sometimes written in a variant form (zheng).
In the South City Linked Verses (Chengnan Lianju) by Han Yu: High words crash against the clouds in their towering heights. The commentary notes: This refers to the towering appearance of a mountain. In the Inspiration Poems (Ganxing Shi) by Meng Jiao: I wish to load my carriage and horses, but the Taihang road is steep and towering.
According to the Correction of Characters (Zhengzitong), the characters for zheng and zheng appear interchangeably in the poetry and rhapsodies of the ancients; although the characters are distinct, their meanings are identical.
