Classic of Mountains and Seas (Erya), Interpretation of Mountains: A mountain that is large and high is called song. Commentary: Song means to rise up. It is also a term for height.
Book of Odes (Shijing), Greater Odes: Song is high, as is the peak. Commentary: Peak refers to the Four Peaks. Commentary: In the time of Emperor Yao, there were only Four Peaks; it did not refer to the Central Peak. It is also said that song describes a high appearance. This refers to a mountain that is high and large, which is named song itself, and is not used exclusively for the Central Peak. The current Central Peak is named Song, which perhaps took its name from this usage.
Han Yu, Sending off Staff Officer Hou: In the third month, walk through the foothills of Song and Shao, where rhododendrons bloom in a thousand layers. Note: Refers to Mount Song and Mount Shaoshi.
Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi): Song refers to Mount Song, the Central Peak. Note: Also written with the element for pine tree.
Comprehensive Refinements (Tongya): Sun Mian and Xu Xuan combined song and the variant character song into one. Dai Tong disagreed with this, holding to the original distinctions.
