Collection of Rhymes (Jiyun): Pronounced jia. A place beside a mountain.
Huainanzi, Original Way Training (Huainanzi Yuandao Xun): Wandering by the side of a mountain ridge.
Annotation: A ridge is the side of a mountain.
Zuo Si, Rhapsody on the Capital of Wu (Wudu Fu): Overturning places where grasses and trees grow thick, turning over mountain peaks.
Annotation: The space between two mountains is called a ridge.
There is also Red Ridge (Chijia), which is the name of a mountain located north of the city of Kuizhou Prefecture in Shu. It has a lonely city on top, which is the site of the ancient Yufu County. To the south, it connects to White Emperor Mountain (Baidi Shan). The mountain grows no grass or trees, and the soil and rocks are all red. Common tradition says it resembles a person with a bare shoulder, which is why it is called Red Ridge.
There is also ridge-like (jiage), which refers to an appearance of being continuous and connected.
Zhang Xie, Rhapsody on the Luo River Purification Festival (Luoxi Fu): The men and women of the capital are numerous and relaxed. Carriages and horses are continuous, filling the great road.
