According to the Tang Yun dictionary, the pronunciation is zāi. According to the Jiyun, Yunhui, and Zhengyun dictionaries, the pronunciation is zāi. Shuowen Jiezi defines it as fire from heaven. In the Spring and Autumn Annals (Chunqiu), fourteenth year of Duke Huan, it is recorded: The imperial granary suffered a calamity. Also, per the Yupian dictionary, it means harm. In the Book of Documents (Shangshu), Chapter on the Canon of Shun, it states: Accidental harm shall be pardoned. The commentary explains: An act done by mistake that causes harm should be met with a delayed pardon.
