Pronounced dang (falling tone).
In the Shuo Wen Jie Zi (Shuo Wen), it means to pass by. Another meaning is a cavernous house; derived from the roof radical with the phonetic component derived from dang (simplified).
In the Guliang Commentary (Guliang Zhuan), Year 11 of Duke Wen: The three brothers of the Changdi tribe wandered into the Central Kingdom.
Also the name of a prefecture. It was the territory of various Qiang tribes during the Qin and Han dynasties. After the Northern Wei dynasty submitted, the Northern Zhou dynasty established Dang Prefecture there. It is located beyond the borders of Shaanxi; the Xiang township of Dang exists in Runan.
According to the Jiyun (Jiyun), stoneworkers are referred to as danghu.
According to the Zhengzitong (Zhengzitong), it is also used interchangeably with dang (to wander or discard).
Textual Research: In the Guliang Commentary (Guliang Zhuan), Year 11 of Duke Wen, the original text reads brothers; this correction has been made accordingly.
