Pronounced ji (falling tone).
Shuowen Jiezi (Explanation of Graphs and Analysis of Characters): No human sound. Originally written with the radical for small bean (shu) under the roof (mian) radical.
Xu says: This is the character mo. Modern texts write it as ji.
Guangyun (Broad Rhymes): Quiet, peaceful.
Book of Changes (Yijing), Appended Remarks: Without thought, without action. Quiet and unmoving, sensitive and able to comprehend the principles of all things under heaven.
Shangshu (Classic of History), Preface by Kong Anguo: The Way itself is void, quiet, and desolate. It possesses neither names nor language.
Jinshu (Book of Jin), Biography of Gu Kaizhi: Serving as Magistrate of Shanyin, he kept the curtains lowered during the day, and the steps before the gate were quiet and soundless.
