It is a variant form of the character written as zhi. According to the Commentary of Guliang (Guliang Zhuan), in the tenth year of the reign of Duke Xi, Lady Li had two sons; the elder was named Xiqi, and the younger was named Zhuozi. It is also used as a surname. According to the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Shang Annals Eulogy, Xie was of the Zi surname, and his descendants were enfeoffed in various regions, taking the names of their fiefs as surnames, among which is the Zhi clan.
