According to the Broad Rhymes (Guangyun), the Rhymes Collection (Jiyun), the Rhyme Compendium (Yunhui), and the Standard Rhymes (Zhengyun), it is pronounced zhi (falling tone). It is the same as the character zhi. Sometimes it is also written as zhi. The Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) defines it as a term expressing cognition. The character form is composed of white, defect, and know. Note: In classical works, it is traditionally written as zhi. The Explaining Names (Shiming) states: Zhi means to know. It refers to the state of having nothing that is not known. Mencius (Mengzi) states: The heart that clearly distinguishes right from wrong is the beginning of wisdom. Xunzi, Chapter on Rectifying Names (Zhengming Pian) states: To recognize things and be able to correspond with reality is called zhi. Note: In classical works, it is sometimes used interchangeably with the character zhi. It is also a surname. The Broad Rhymes (Guangyun) records: There was a Zhi Bo in the State of Jin.
