Zuo Zhuan (Chronicle of Zuo): Even regarding the smallest trifle, people will fight for it. Commentary: The tip of a needle or knife is a metaphor for a minor matter.
Shiji (Records of the Grand Historian): Mao Sui said: If I had been placed in a bag like an awl, the tip would have shown itself immediately; it would not have been just the point alone.
Hanshu (History of the Former Han): Emperor Shun had no land even the size of an awl, yet he possessed the whole world.
Huainanzi: As swift as an awl or an arrow. Commentary: An awl is an arrow with a metal tip and feathered shaft.
