According to the Explanation of Graphs and Analysis of Characters (Shuowen), it refers to the sound of a cow panting. It also refers to a type of cow. It is also a surname. According to the Comprehensive Account of Customs (Fengsu Tong), it is the descendants of the Jin state official Xi Chou.
