In the Book of Rites (Liji), record of Tan Gong: Bo Gao died in Wei, and the announcement (fù) was sent to Confucius. The commentary notes that this is the same as the character for obituary (fù).
According to the Corrected Character Guide (Zhengzitong), it is also written as the variant form (bào). In the Book of Rites (Liji), Small Record of Mourning Attire: One who announces (bào) the burial also announces (bào) the peace-offering. The commentary notes that the word announce (bào) should be read as arrive (fù), meaning to do so with speed.
