Xu states: Zhen means zhen (upright). Zhen means correct. When a person possesses goodness, heaven uses signs to confirm and inform them of that correctness. Book of Rites, Doctrine of the Mean (Zhongyong): There must be auspicious signs. Commentary: That which originally existed but now appears in a different form is called zhen; for example, if there were originally sparrows and now a red sparrow appears, that is zhen. That which did not exist before but now appears is called xiang; if there was originally no phoenix, and now a phoenix appears, that is xiang.
