The name of a spirit. Furthermore, according to the Supplement to the Collection of Characters (Zihui bu), it is pronounced chong (level tone). It is equivalent to the character for being unburdened or modest (chong). As stated in the book Essentials of the Master (Xunzi), "Their words are spiritual and modest" (Fei shi er zi pian). The commentary notes that this refers to being modest and indifferent (chongdan).
