Pronounced xiang. The name of a river. Discussion in Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) states: This water originates from the mountains in Linqu County, Qi State, and flows northeast into Juding Marsh. Jade Chapter (Yupian) states: This water originates from the north side of the Kunlun Mountains. Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhaijing) states: At the Hill of Kunlun, the Yang Water originates here. Additionally, the Jie Water is the Yang Water, originating northwest of Shanggui County. Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhaijing) states: At Gui Mountain, the Meng Water originates and flows south into the Yang Water. It is also the name of a river in the Shu region. Commentary on the Water Classic (Shuijing) states: The Han Water flows east and joins the Yang Water. It is also the name of a prefecture. Broad Rhymes (Guangyun) states: Originally Chenggu County of the Han Dynasty, established as Hanzhong Commandery in the Qin Dynasty, and designated as Yang Prefecture during the Wei Dynasty.
Pronounced yang. Explaining the Ancient (Erya) states: Yang means many. Classic of Poetry (Shijing), Odes of Lu, describes the scale of a dance as grand and numerous. It also means broad or vast. Classic of Poetry (Shijing), Greater Odes, describes the pasture lands as vast and boundless. Doctrine of the Mean (Zhongyong) describes grand virtue as being widely disseminated throughout the Central Plains. It also refers to waves. Zhuangzi, Autumn Floods, depicts the River God looking out over the vast ocean and sighing toward the God of the Sea. It also refers to the name of a sea. Record of Xu Jing's Mission to Goryeo (Xu Jing Shigaoli Lu) states: In the sea, there is the White Water Yang, whose source comes from the Mohe region, hence it appears white. The Yellow Water Yang is the tip of a sandbar, where the water is turbid and shallow.
Also, yang yang, describes water as vast and powerful. Classic of Poetry (Shijing), Odes of Wei, describes the mighty flow of the Yellow River.
It is interchangeable with yang (to roam). Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Biography of King Bi of Wu, states: Roaming throughout the world. Commentary explains: Roaming is like soaring.
It is also interchangeable with yang (to nourish). Explaining the Instructions (Erya) states: Yang yang means to yearn or miss. Sub-commentary explains: In the Classic of Poetry (Shijing), Odes of Bei, there is the line: With the heart yearning. Yang and yang are identical in pronunciation and meaning.
Textual research: Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhaijing) states: At Gui Mountain, the Meng Water originates and flows south into the Yang. Note that the original text Meng has been corrected to Meng (with water radical). The character Water has been added after the character Yang.
