In Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is also pronounced yang. It refers to the essence of earth. According to the Discourses on the Book of Changes (Yi shuo), the Great Mountain lost its golden rooster, and the Western Peak lost its jade yang. It also refers to a soil-dwelling anomaly. In the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), the Hereditary House of Confucius notes that when Ji Huanzi was digging a well, he obtained an earthenware vessel containing a creature shaped like a sheep. He asked Confucius about it, who replied, According to what I have heard, an anomaly of the earth is known as a fen yang. Sometimes it is written as sheep.
