Mao Collection, Upper Volume Radical: Heart (xīn) Kangxi stroke count: 10 Page 384, Entry 23 Pronounced yàng. Er Ya (Erya), Explanation of Ancient Words: Yang means worry. The commentary states: Regarding the word yang, the Book of Rites (Yili), section on the Protocol of Envoys, mentions the Duke inquiring of the guest, and the guest responding twice. The annotation by Zheng Xuan says: May you have no yang (illness/worry). Guo Pu notes: People today say "no yang," meaning no worry. Guangyun (Guangyun): Worry or illness. It also refers to a biting insect that enjoys eating the human heart. Popular Customs (Fengsu Tong): This biting insect can eat the human heart. In ancient times, people lived among grasses and were frequently afflicted by this poison, hence they would inquire about each other by saying "no yang." As seen in Strategies of the Warring States (Zhan Guo Ce), the Queen Dowager of Zhao asked the envoy of Qi: Is the King also without yang? In Garden of Stories (Shuoyuan), Marquis Wen of Wei said to Cang Geng: Hit without yang. In the History of the Former Han (Hanshu), Emperor Wu replied to Gongsun Hong: Why has the yang not ceased? In the Book of Jin (Jinshu), Biography of Literary Men, Gu Kaizhi wrote a letter to Yin Zhongkan, mentioning a cloth sail with no yang. In the Book of Sui (Suishu), the Japanese envoy sent a letter to the Emperor saying no yang. All these are expressions of inquiry and comfort. Also pronounced yáng. In the Songs of Chu (Chuci), Nine Arguments: The plan is singular and cannot be violated, I wish to push forward and do good. Relying on the deep virtue of August Heaven, it returns to the King without yang. Note: There are two meanings for yang. One is an insect, the other is a beast. The Guangyun and Yupian dictionaries annotate these very clearly. Since the Book of Miraculous Anomalies (Shenyi Jing) combined them into one, and later dictionaries quoted them in a confused manner, the Records of Cessation of Farming (Chuigeng Lu) has clarified this in detail.
