Pronounced lu (rising tone). To capture and seize as spoils. Annotation in the History of the Former Han (Hanshu) by Jin Zhuo states: To capture alive is called lu, while to strike off a head is called huo.
Also a place name. In the Commentary on the Water Classic (Shuijing Zhu), it is noted that the Zi River flows eastward through the old city of Linzi County; its outer wall is the city where Duke Xian of Jin resided, which people of that time referred to as Lu City.
In the Six Writings Corrected (Liushu Zheng’e), it is noted that because captives are bound and held with ropes, the character is composed of the elements for a string or thread and for strength. The common variant form using the element for male is incorrect.
