The character is pronounced xù. According to Shuowen Jiezi (Shuōwén Jiězì): To encourage, to exert oneself. Formed from the radical Strength (lì), with mào as the phonetic component. Xu Kai (Xú Kǎi) says: To exert oneself in a task, to undertake it with daring. From the Book of Documents (Shàngshū), "The Speech at Mu": "Exert yourselves, my lords!".
