In the Erya (Ěryǎ), Explanations of Words, shào miǎn means to encourage. The Fangyan (Fāngyán) by Yangzi states that in the region between the states of Zhou and Zheng, mutual encouragement is referred to as miǎn. Also, according to the Jiyun, it is pronounced mǐn, with the same meaning. Sometimes also written as the variant form mǐn or mǐn.
