According to Jiyun and Yunhui, pronounced like nǔ (弩) from the phonetic elements nuan wu qie. Fangyan says it means to encourage or to exert oneself. Zengyun states it refers to using force. Guangyun defines it as striving or making an effort. From Li Ling's Poem to Su Wu (Lǐ Líng Yǔ Sū Wǔ Shī): "Strive to uphold bright virtue."
