According to Tangyun and Zhengyun, pronounced like nǔ (弩) from the phonetic elements nuo guo qie. According to Jiyun and Yunhui, pronounced like nǔ (弩) from the phonetic elements nuan wu qie. Fangyan says it means to encourage or to exert oneself. Zengyun states it refers to using force. Guangyun defines it as striving or making an effort. From Li Ling's Poem to Su Wu (Lǐ Líng Yǔ Sū Wǔ Shī): "Strive to uphold bright virtue." Jiyun also has an entry pronounced nǔ in the even tone, from the phonetic elements nong dou qie, meaning to combine strength or to exert full effort.
